Pupuan comes from the Balinese word “pupu” which means “thigh”, because it is located on the “thigh” of Mount Batukaru. The name Pupuan also comes from the word “plupuhan” which means “puddle”, because it is surrounded by highlands, so it looks like a puddle. Located at an altitude of between 500 meters above sea level and 1,000 meters above sea level and with a cool climate, Pupuan is the right area for robusta coffee to grow. The sub-district at the foot of Mount Batukaru is the largest robusta coffee production center in Tabanan Regency, ahead of West Selemadeg and Penebel sub-districts.

Robusta coffee’s caffeine content is almost twice that of arabica coffee so it generally tastes more bitter, with lower acidity. Pupuan robusta coffee is unique in that it is less bitter, as it is grown at a relatively high altitude compared to other robusta coffee producing areas. In general, farmers here manage coffee plantations of 0.5 to 1.5 hectares. In the garden there are also other plants with an intercropping system, such as mangosteen, durian, and snakefruit. Besides applying coffee cultivation using organic fertilizers, coffee farmers in Pupuan also apply subak. Subak is an irrigation system for irrigating rice fields or plantations that has been practiced for generations in Bali. The subak system is proven to improve soil quality and increase production. This is related to the agreement among farmers not to use chemicals in the form of factory-made fertilizers, or chemical-based pesticides. Farmers in Bali adhere to the Tri Hita Karana principle, which is a philosophy centered on maintaining peace and tranquility between man and God, man and man, and man and his environment.
